At least five people died when a small Mexican Navy aircraft crashed on Monday off the Texas coast near Galveston during a mission for an organisation that helps child burn victims, including transferring them for treatment in the US.

Mexico's Navy secretariat said the aircraft carried eight people, including four naval personnel and four civilians.

One person is missing and two survived.

The aircraft was on a mission providing specialized medical transport. It was carried out in coordination with the Michou y Mau Foundation, which assists Mexican children with severe burns.

Investigations will be carried out to determine the causes of the crash, the Mexican authority added in a statement.
