US forces carried out strikes on two Iranian launchers on Larak Island on Sunday, marking the first known American strikes on Iran since late July.
A US official said the launchers were targeted after forces from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were observed preparing to launch rockets carrying sea mines into the Strait of Hormuz.
The US official confirmed that two launchers were struck.
US forces stationed in Jordan were subsequently targeted by ballistic missiles, according to US media reports citing American sources.
Fox News reported that nearly all incoming missiles had been intercepted and there had been no significant impact. Axios also reported that ballistic missiles were used in the attack.
The latest escalation comes days after US President Donald Trump said mines had been removed or detonated in international waters in the Strait of Hormuz and warned that vessels attempting to lay new mines would be destroyed.
The strikes are the first known US attacks on Iranian territory since late July.
The conflict began on February 28 and has now passed the six-month mark. The Strait of Hormuz, which handled around a fifth of global oil supplies before the war, has faced severe disruption during the conflict.
