New GCC Civil Aviation Authority in UAE strengthens regional ties: GCAA

The decision to establish the GCC Civil Aviation Authority, with its headquarters in the UAE, reflects a unified vision to "strengthen Gulf integration in the air transport ecosystem", the country's aviation regulatory body said.

General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said the step by the Supreme Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will also create growth opportunities for the aviation sector not only across the Gulf but also at the regional and international levels.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Tourism and Chairman of the GCAA, said it reflects the unified vision of GCC States to build an integrated aviation system supporting trade, tourism, and economic development.

The decision to set up the headquarters in the UAE also "strengthens the (country's) strategic position and reinforces its leadership in international aviation, while highlighting its pivotal role in developing the sector across the region".

Meanwhile, Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, said the decision supports the sector’s readiness to respond to the rapidly evolving global aviation landscape.

The new GCC Civil Aviation Authority will promote legislative and operational harmonisation among member states and enhance the capacity to keep pace with fast-moving technological developments in global aviation.
