Dubai gears up for final phase of single-use plastic ban

Dubai Municipality has announced that the final phase of the ban on single-use plastic products in the emirate will come into force on January 1, 2026.

The move aligns with a federal Cabinet resolution regulating the use of single-use products across UAE markets.

The final phase will prohibit a wide range of plastic items, including, but not limited to, plates, cutlery and chopsticks, beverage cups and their lids.

It also reinforces earlier bans already introduced in Dubai, covering polystyrene cups, plates and food containers, along with plastic straws, stirrers, cotton buds and disposable table covers.

To ensure a smooth transition, Dubai Municipality has issued a comprehensive awareness guide to help businesses and other entities switch to approved, sustainable alternatives in line with the regulations.

The municipality says it will continue promoting sustainable practices across both the public and private sectors. The aim is to encourage responsible consumption, reduce reliance on plastic, and support environmental sustainability.

The ban has been rolled out in stages, starting with single-use plastic bags in January 2024, followed by a ban on all single-use bags in June that year.

The third phase began in January 2025, expanding restrictions to include items such as plastic straws, stirrers and styrofoam cups and food containers, leading up to the final phase in 2026.
